“Strike” Notification System Failed to Boost Legal Sales

A recent study revealed that so-called “graduated response” regimes are not able to increase box office revenues. According to the recent research, where the experts considered the effects in a range of countries (including the US), the anti-piracy measures of this type are not as effective as the copyright holders had expected.

Over the past years, the entertainment industry groups have successfully lobbied for “strikes” response systems, according to which online infringers are warned and eventually fined. For example, France was one of the first countries which introduced the “three-strikes” graduated response system, followed by Ireland, South Korea, New Zealand, the US and others.

Of course, such laws are aimed at decreasing the overall piracy rates and boosting revenues for copyright owners. But it seems that they fail to achieve the goal. Dr. Jordi McKenzie of Sydney’s Macquarie University suggests in his research that such policies can’t help box office revenues.

The researcher studied the opening week and total box office revenues for more than 6,000 movies released over the past decade, and then measured the impact of the “strikes” systems and related policies in 6 countries, with another 10 countries being included as a control measure. In result, he came to a conclusion that such anti-piracy policies had no significant impact on legitimate sales, as no consistent evidence of higher theatrical box office revenues was found.

It must be noted that a range of robustness checks were applied – for instance, the researcher looked at possible effects for separate movie genres, but none explained the findings. Why is so? Well, file-sharers might be continuing their old habits because they don’t get caught or simply taking measures to hide their piracy habits using VPNs or streaming/hosting services.

The more interesting part of the research is investigation of the effect of the MegaUpload shutdown, which showed some drop in box office revenues – obviously not the effect Hollywood was expected. Apparently, this means that pirates can easily move from one service to another – for example, many torrent users moved to other websites when KickassTorrents was taken down in 2016.

UncleFester99 avatarThey'd have better box office sales if the 80% of the movies being released these days weren't "reboots" or pure garbage.

No avatarNot only are they garbage, very few gems in the mix. But, and this is no lie or exaggeration, it cost me nearly $100.00 U.S. to take my family of 5 to the movies; with 3 popcorn and 3 drinks. It was not even a 3d or imax show. It wasn't special in way; just standard definition. This is the reason people are not going to the movies!!! How can a kid go on a date if it costs almost 50 bucks? How can families look forward to going to the movies if it is such a major investment? We saw Moana; it sucked, but the kids liked it. But I'm still out almost $100.00. Guess it will be awhile before i let myself get burned again...

Genesistt avatarIt's true. Going to the movies is no longer a cheap fun afternoon. The cost of the movie itself is insane and adding into that the cost of food and drink makes it almost unaffordable. I have to think long and hard about which movies I want to go and invest in seeing, as I tend to go to the movies over the weekend and not on the cheaper halfprice Tuesdays. (Who has energy after a long day at work to go to the movies in the evening!) Personally, I rather wait for the dvd's to come out and buy the ones I want. It works out the same price, now that I think of it.

PenguinPirate avatarDoes it really cot that much to go cinema in the US? I am singe parent so I would only be bringing my daughter but I would get in with her for around €15 and may be another €15 for munchies, but it certainly wouldn't be more. Last time I went I was be able to bring a girl or my daughter to cinema for €30 no problem. Its around €8 or €9 for adult ticket and €6 or €7 for childs ticket and they don't do very well even at that price. But I am talking about the local cinema not one in the city center. I am pretty shocked at the thought of €100 to go. But I guess it be less in euro may be?

SlapHappy avatarmost movies downloaded are movies most people would not pay money for anyway I know when a movie hits box office like the latest Star wars I go and pay to see it but even when you were able to rent movies there were many that I just would wait the year or so till hit cable free to me.

Ekto avatarI didn't go to the movies much before movie piracy, and I still don't go to the movies very much. The only thing a warning would do is make me watch fewer movies. And the only thing piracy allows is for me to watch more crap (unfortunately!).

@PenguinPirate, in Australia, an adult movie ticket is about $26, so $100 including snacks for a family sounds about the same as here.

No avatar@ PenguinPirate yea it really cost that Much in the US i don't go to movies any more most of the time the movies they try to pass off as movies are junk but from time to time a few JEM's pop out of all the BS B or C type movie they call movies these days.it nothing like it was 20 years ago i remember my kids days of going to a good movie for a buck to get in and may be total cost with pop corn coke with free refills was three bucks you saw a good movie back then that was worth watching on the big Screen, which, is very rare these days.
I wonder about some of the reviews they write up that try to make a really bad movie a must see movie then once it is released as a stream you wonder how much they were paid to lie

Proof of work download a few of the samples you to see how bad some the movie/s are that look good till you watch it .

should i go on Nah . LMAO ...

No avatarBrazilian cinemas charge an absurd amount. They try to equate the values with the change of foreign currencies and this results in a very high cost for those who receive in Real R $. While some pay 8 Euros, we pay 26 to 30 Reais per person.
